Reasons behind school shootings: Part II… Story By Lauren Stidham

Reasons behind school shootings: Part II

One thing that can be linked to school violence and school shootings is violent video games and television. Kids all around our country have free access to countless video games, shows, and movies. Most of these portray violence one way or another. Although some are much more graphic than others, it remains nonetheless.

So what does violent screenplay have to do with school shootings?

Could it really lead to violence?... Could video games really cause a school shooting, or is it just some old wives tale? Photo-By: digitaltrends.com
Could it really lead to violence?… Could video games really cause a school shooting, or is it just some old wives tale? Photo-By: digitaltrends.com

We will start with video games. Many parents, teachers, and other people in authority frown on over usage of video games, and in some cases they don’t allow it at all. Now of course we must consider that there are certain video games that are well designed and geared towards promoting learning, not all video games are violent.

Of course, a majority of the best-sellers are very violent. Out of the top ten best-sellers of 2015, only two of them aren’t graphically violent. The other eight are all based upon extremely violent scenarios and depict scenes of which you are expected to take the lives of people in gruesome ways.

According to studies conducted by Dr. Vincent Matthews from Indiana University, violent video games alter the person’s ability to use emotions, attention, and concentration. His experiment involved making a group of young men play violent video games two hours a day for just a week. In just that time frame, their brains had already altered.

“The brain changes that Matthews’ group saw were similar to those seen in teens with destructive sociopathic disorders” – Time.com

Now think of the kids who have been under the influence of video games for a matter of years, by this time, their emotional and concentration part of their brain would be eroded. Without that emotional part functioning properly, the person can become dangerous. Most of what keeps normal people from killing is the emotional and/or moral standard.

Not only do video games change the way your brain works, but they can also be very addictive. World of Warcraft in particular is the center of many cases of addictions. There are several reasons realism, social interaction, and the ongoing sense that there is always a next level.

The game’s realism is created by having camera views that simulate the views that one would get if you were actually in the game, plus you can adjust the view to get the desired effect. There is a network of people who play the game and you can pair up with them and go on quests together. This provides a source to fulfill social needs. Additionally, World of Warcraft is an ongoing game of which doesn’t have an end. You can continually advance in the game, you can move to a new realm when you max out in one realm. The makers of the game update it and add new realms regularly.

To read an article about how World of Warcraft effected Ryan van Cleave’s life go to http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2011/aug/29/world-of-warcraft-video-game-addict

Additionally, there is another link between violent video games and school shootings. This one applies directly to violent television.

As earlier stated, kids all around have full access to violent video games and television. This can prove to be bad because as a child develops, they aren’t quite able to tell the difference between reality and fiction.  In the movies like the book of Eli and video games like grand theft auto five, the people don’t have consequences for their actions the way that real people do.  A child could believe that they could do what their favorite television or video game character does.

“I have ultimate control and can do what I want with few real repercussions.” – Ryan van Cleave, former World of Warcraft addict.

How does it Work?... How could watching television really affect your mind? Photo By: Shutterstock
How does it Work?… How could watching television really affect your mind? Photo By: Shutterstock

Further, television can promote the idea of violence. There are many popular movies where the main character is a criminal. Many shows are designed in a way that distorts our idea of a hero. Instead of the classic chivalrous hero who saves the innocent, we have characters who are masters of destruction and know gruesome and cruel means to “get the job done.”

Now the question is, does that really cause violence as severe as a school shooting? A majority of perfectly normal people have experienced violent media. Shouldn’t there be a whole lot more school shootings if violence and graphic media are so directly linked?

The truth is that it takes a still developing or unstable brain to see an act of violence and then commit an act of violence as severe as a school shooting. It all goes back to the condition of the brain. Yes, video games and television can help to provoke an act of violence, but it is very rare that it is the sole cause.

However it is not counted out as a possibility for a cause.

“Craig A. Anderson and Brad J. Bushman found a statistically significant small-to-moderate-strength relationship between watching violent media and acts of aggression or violence later in life.” – New York Times

Studies show that there are actually some direct correlations between violence and media violence. To look over the evidence yourself you can follow this link to http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/25/opinion/sunday/does-media-violence-lead-to-the-real-thing.html?_r=0 .

Words Can Hurt… Story by Catherine Jay

Words Can Hurt

Story By: Catherine Jay

Bullying. The word itself has been around for years. What do you think when you hear ‘bully’? Many of you probably think of the usual nerd who gets bullied for his money, one of the most common scenarios in movies or books. Bullying really does happen, even if

2012 stats of bullying... This shows the percentage of reported bullying in a high school back in 2012.
2012 stats of bullying… This shows the percentage of reported bullying in a high school back in 2012.

some people don’t want to believe it. There are children, teenagers, adults who suffer from this thing. Bullying isn’t something that’s right, but does that stop it?

High school. The time in your life where many people are working hard to get into a good college, get their lives in check, find a path they want to go down. So where would bullying fit into this routine? Where would these students find time to bully others? Unlike middle school, high school bullying decreases. However it doesn’t go away. Instead of physical bullying, it’s emotional, verbal, and mental bullying. This type of bullying can be worse than actual physical bullying.

Gays, lesbians, teens with disabilities and teens in certain ethnic groups or who are people of color are often singled out for bullying in high school. This is usually because they are different from the majority in high schools. These teens are getting judged for being different, for being themselves. This can lead to many events such as emotional instability, suicidal thoughts, depression the list can go on, but I will only name a few. There many forms of bullying in schools, but there are ones that are the most known. As mentioned before, high school bullying declines, but it’s not nonexistent.

Physical bullying, such as hitting, kicking, shoving or forced touching, is the easiest form of bullying to identify. Emotional bullying is much more subtle, particularly the usual tactic is to spread malicious rumors about the victim which makes it very difficult to identify the source of the rumors. Other emotional or mental bullying includes making fun of people, isolating them, giving someone the silent treatment, or ignoring them, making them feel like they don’t exist. Emotional bullying usually includes some form of verbal abuse, such as calling the victim fat, ugly, stupid, cursing or laughing at them.

Then there is one of the most cruel and violent ways of bullying. Cyberbullying. This may be one of the most difficult types of bullying to catch and get rid of it. Chat rooms and false email addresses provide a mask to the bully, who can be as horrible and vicious as he or she chooses. Electronic media also allows the bully a wide audience for rumors, innuendo and harassment. Social networking sites, blogs and other forms of web postings can reach millions of people, exposing the victim to further ridicule if other bullies join in.

This is the generation we live in. High school students who appear to have normal everyday stressful lives, may in fact be the victim of some cruel game. The fear of not wanting to tell anyone, the drive of just wanting to end their lives, these teenagers aren’t even able to experience their lives before they may end it. High school students have the highest rate of dropouts and suicide due to the malicious bullying that occurs underneath the watchful eyes of parents, teachers, and peers.

Stop Bullying... People all over the world are being judged and bullied for their differences. Don’t let your child, sibling, or friend become that bully or the bullied.
Stop Bullying… People all over the world are being judged and bullied for their differences. Don’t let
your child, sibling, or friend become that bully or the bullied.

How can we stop these horrible occurrences before they even start? When will the teenagers of our generation be able to go to school without fearing a rumor, a picture, a tweet. The only way we can try and keep these students safe is by raising awareness to the cruelness of teenagers. To help show everyone in schools, jobs, homes, that there are people who care, there are people who are watching out for them. If you are being bullied, or witness someone being bullied at FBCS, please seek out a teacher, principal, or councilor.

Are we Over-Vaccinating?… Story by Nina Romanoff

Are We Over Vaccinating?

Is America over vaccinating their children? New studies have shown that the over vaccination of our youth have been leading to weak and compromised immune systems. What if vaccines are doing more harm than they are doing good? Let me introduce you to Sloan Warner. Sloan was vaccinated as a young child for various allergies but instead was burdened with now a life long struggle with allergies. Before the vaccine, which she was administered at age four, she had no. Now she has multiple allergies to cats, pollen, sugar, dust, and a minor gluten allergy. All of these allergies fabricated right after her vaccination. Sloan is only one of millions who have had their immune system compromised by vaccines.

In the mid to late 1890’s a polio vaccination was released for the first time, the consequences were dire. After the release of the faulty vaccine which contained the live polio virus, thousands of children were diagnosed with the disease and many died from complete respiratory failure. Polio is now a thing of the past now that we have working vaccines for it, but only after 2 failed attempts. By looking at the history of vaccines I can safely say that vaccines are not as safe and reliable as we assume. Yes, the science of vaccinations has come quite a long way, but that’s exactly what they thought a hundred years ago. Vaccination is still not reliable, but scientists find the only way to figure whether the vaccine is faulty or not is to inject them directly into us.

Now let me tell you that vaccines have done a load of good to our modern world! Say a 23 year old man has not had the chickenpox yet, let’s call him Steve. The fact that he has not been infected with the virus can be problematic because the severity of the virus will increase with the age of the patient. Steve is worried that he will later in life encounter this seemingly “harmless” virus.  Which as you could imagine would cause a possible life threatening issue in his future. So instead of risking his chances he gets himself a chickenpox vaccination. The vaccine will ensure the absence of chickenpox in his future, but if the vaccine is unsuccessful it will only be a mild case of the virus. A few pox’s here a few pox’s there. The point is that vaccines do as much good if not more good than they do harm.

Reason Behind School Shootings: Part 1… Story by Lauren Stidham

Two decades ago, school shootings were practically unheard of. Today they aren’t by any means a rare occurrence. What is the difference? Why is society so prone to violence now?

Plain and Simple... These are school shootings around the country, as you can see, they are all over especially in the east. Chart by: callinskylm.hubpages.com

Depression. You hear about it all the time, if you flip on the TV there will likely be a commercial about the newest antidepressant. But what is depression exactly?

“Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest…it affects how you feel, think and behave…depression isn’t a weakness and you can’t simply “snap out” of it…Depression often begins in the teens, 20s or 30s…”

– Mayo Clinic

The answer for why depression is so much more common today than

Sad Statistics... These are Statistics of school shootings from 1997 to 2012 as you can see, most of the killers are in fact students.
Sad Statistics… These are Statistics of school shootings from 1997 to 2012 as you can see, most of the killers are in fact students.

in previous years lies in the cause. Depression usually starts because of serious medical illness and a major change in life such as the loss of a loved one or a move. In the present culture, both of these are more prevalent.

Serious illnesses such as cancer are popping up all the time now. If you think about it, a hundred years ago no one was gluten free, dairy free, soy free, or any of that. The world we live in has slowly become more disease-prone.

Things like divorces and separation of families is very ubiquitous in modern culture. Before, things like that were not as acceptable and so it made them atypical. Now they are widely accepted.

So, if the things that cause depression are more regular, that means depression is now more rampant.

Some of the major complications that result from this frequently seen depression include family conflicts, relationship difficulties, and work or school problems. When social aspects of a teen’s life are affected like this, things go wrong. Someone who is having bad relationships all around could be prone to violence.

There are several main types of antidepressants that people can take to ease their symptoms, and while medications can prove to really help, sometimes there can be side effects.

One of the main groups of medication is called Tricyclic antidepressant. According to the Mayo Clinic, Tricyclics have many side effects and many of them are severe. One of these is confusion or disorientation.

When someone is confused or disorientated their perception of reality is blurred. Someone without a clear mind that is watching violence on television or playing violent video games can’t quite decipher between what is real and what is not so they become corrupted by what they see. This sadly ends up in violent thoughts and actions.

Bipolar disorder is another type of depression, it can be treated with a mood-stabilizing medication. These medications seem to work well for the majority and clear up most symptoms after a while. For the minority on the other hand, things don’t go so well.

Shocking Reality... Studies show that 90% of the school shootings were done by people on Pharmaceuticals (medication)
Shocking Reality… Studies show that 90% of the school shootings were done by people on Pharmaceuticals (medication)

“In about 10% to 20% of people with bipolar disorder, antidepressants may cause shifts from depression into a manic episode…mania can cause sleeplessness, sometimes for days, along with hallucinations, psychosis, grandiose delusions, or paranoid rage.” – WedMD

Hallucinations are when you see things that aren’t really there. Psychosis is when you believe things that aren’t true and behave strangely. Grandiose delusions are when you believe something is way bigger or more important than it really is. Paranoid rage is when you see threats that aren’t really there and act violently about them. All of these symptoms can easily lead to a school shooting.

“At least 35 school shootings and/or school-related acts of violence have been committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs” – CCHR International Mental Health Watchdog

So, as you can see, depression can easily be counted as one of the major causes for all these school shootings, and while the medications usually make the patient’s symptoms much better, sometimes these drugs only make matters much worse.

Are you ConCERNed?… Story by Nina Romanoff

Are you conCERNed?

Something out of science fiction... CERN's Hadron Collider is fully operations and making new discoveries. Photo-by cerncourier.com

Now I’m guessing you, the reader is wondering, “What is CERN?” Let me tell you, CERN is a European research organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world! CERN has devoted the last 60 years to the research of probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Although most have a pretty good idea of what they are doing there is still an element of the unknown. Now CERN is restarting the world’s most powerful particle accelerator and have been creating some chatter around the public with some claims that may interest you.

It is not confirmed but there was some talk about how CERN was opening the gateway to a new dimension. The possibility of this occurring seems highly likely but when you put more thought into it how much about dimensional travel do you know? Chances are it’s slim to none so how can you possible sweep aside the possibility of dimensional travel?! I would rather not go into the numerous claims and theories about CERN’s covert operation mostly because there is just too much to handle. But I will go into one theory that interested me on a whole new level.

Recently a video was released called “Symmetry” or more widely known as “the dance of destruction.” The filming of the video (or trailer) took place inside CERN. This wasn’t any ordinary creepy, vague video; this video is on a whole new level of creepy and vague. So bizarre I’m linking it below! But be warned, you may just get sucked into all of this CERN madness, I know I did.

SYMMETRY – CERN opera, trailer v.2 from TRUTH.IO on Vimeo.

This video is a bit unsettling and extremely confusing. There is one thing we can probably all agree on, this isn’t just the trailer for a musical/opera/ballet/whatever it is. There must be some deeper meaning to this video! We have gone over one theory, exploration of a new dimension. What if I told you that people actually believe that CERN’s dance of destruction video is a sneak peek at the future, a future of death and destruction? You heard me; many people have been theorizing that CERN is not opening a new dimension but the gates of Hell.

How much evidence do they have exactly backing up their theory? Slim to none if I’m answering honestly. But at least think about this absurd as it may be. Shiva is the goddess of destruction; this Hindi goddess has been told in legend to destroy entire worlds at the flick of the wrist. Shiva also happens to be CERN’s mascot. Somehow many have been theorizing that CERN could destroy our reality or possibly our perception of it.

Theories and speculations continue to fly about the topic of CERN, when will it stop? Only when CERN gives us peace, peace by releasing the true meaning behind Symmetry, only then will the theories stop.

Pope Bridges Separation Between Church and State by Marcus O’Cyrus

Pope Francis’ first visit to the United States was a historical and noteworthy one. The Pope first met with President Barrack Obama on September 23, 2015 and made a speech at the White House addressing the press. The following day Pope Francis was scheduled to address a joint session of United States Congress with the Supreme Court in attendance. This was a first for the Vatican to address the United States in this fashion.

Weeks before cities began their safety planning for the arrival of Pope Francis by rerouting entire freeway systems to escort him quickly and conveniently to each speaking engagement. Preferential treatment of this magnitude has not been seen for any person before in our country’s history. Surprisingly, not once was the mention of separation of church and state broadcasted as each municipality, county, state, and even our national government bowed its will in servitude to Pope Francis’ visit.

During Pope Francis’ address to Congress, members of both Houses applauded and gave several standing ovations as he spoke words of peace and encouragement. He addressed topics covering a wide range; from the importance of family, taking in refugees fleeing ISIS, religious entities joining together to combat radicalism within their ranks, solving the abortion issue in America by helping solve the cause verses preventing the choice, use of technology to improve lives, encourage the need to solve climate change, and to continue to help the homeless.

The historical significance for the United States on this occasion was immense. This was the first time the Pope and Vatican had directly addressed our national government in this manner. This is the first time the United States has officially acknowledged the Pope as an authority in spiritual as well as a political influence throughout the world.

What did the United States learn from the Pope’s visit? Pope Francis demonstrated his kindness and compassion to all he came into contact with. Instead of receiving an expensive luncheon provided by Congress on the taxpayer’s dime in his honor, he chose to visit a homeless shelter. He kissed babies, shook the hands of the homeless and those assisting them. He visited New York and the epicenter of 9/11 now fourteen years passed. His words of encouragement touched many lives and brought hope to many weary people in our nation.

As time elapses after Pope Francis’ visit, it is up to Americans to not lose hope in their country. People need to continue to seek and practice justice at every decision, and yet remain merciful in how justice is upheld.   Pope Francis reminds us of this, but it is up to Americans to put it into practice. No law or legal system can bring out a desire to help others that must come from within each individual.

Despite Many Predictions; We’re still Here… Story by Charles Harrison

Earth our beautiful home… What are the chances a extinction event could take place? Scientist speculate the Earth has had 6 already thus far. Photo-by NASA

Chances are you have noticed a number of doomsday predictions on the internet for 2015 on the internet. Specifically, a number of websites have been claiming that an asteroid will hit the Earth sometime in the past month. If you have not heard, simply Google “September 2015 Asteroid” and you will get pages and pages of results ether perpetuating or disproving the theory. There are theories that FEMA is stocking up on body bags on the eastern seaboard. Some believe that there is even a massive cover up on the part of NASA itself to convince the general population that they are in no danger when in fact; they will be destroyed by an asteroid. (It is difficult to insert a link here because I don’t trust these websites not to give me a virus. You can if you want. Just Google September 2015 asteroid NASA cover up.)

According to theorist, NASA is vehemently denying the truth to keep the world in the dark about their impending doom for the purposes of… world domination? There are mountains of sketchy evidence against NASA, including leaked photo shopped documents, anonymous tips, and good old creepy websites, complete with news that planets lightyears away are actually changing our day to day weather.

The rumor became so widespread that NASA, along with several news organizations such as Fox 8 and CNN have released press statements specifically addressing the rumor. According to NASA’s own statement, “There is no scientific basis — not one shred of evidence — that an asteroid or any other celestial object will impact Earth…”. That was from Paul Chodas, Manager of the Near Earth Object office at the Jet Population Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

The moral of the story here is DON’T BELIVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON THE INTERNET. Before you repost or share something, check with a reputable source on the subject. NASA is excellent for doomsday predictions, astronomical news, and anything to do with space. CNN, Fox News, anything that ends in “.gov”, university websites, research institutes, there are plenty of reliable news and information sources. You could disagree with everything the organizations I listed above stand for, but it doesn’t change the fact that they are more infinitely reliable than that blog you saw one time that was run by a single individual claiming the arrival of our alien overlord, or that website that was saying that the world was actually going to end September 23 using only crazy theories to back it up. People have believed end of the world predictions from the same websites for years, and they have been wrong every time, as evident for the fact that we’re still alive and kicking. Because the fact is, if the world is going to end, I can guarantee you we won’t hear about it first from “messianicmessiah.blogspot.com”.

Polar shift: The End of the World?… Story by Sherman Peabody

The End is Near! Could everything be ended by a massive polar shift?
The End is Near!… Could everything be ended by a massive polar shift? Photo by timeanddate.com

There are many theories on when the world will end, and nearly all of them describe the cataclysmic circumstances that cause it. Some theories are based on the destructive nature of man, such as a nuclear war or global warming. These theories are preventable, as it is possible to destroy nuclear weapons before they detonate or reduce our carbon footprint. But what can we do when the very core of our earth is going to change patterns?

The polar shift theory describes an event just like that. Imagine all migratory animals going North during fall instead of South, GPS satellites not knowing where they are, and navigation systems all pointing the wrong way. These are just some of the things that could happen if the polarity of our North and South poles switched, and some think that this could happen soon.

But NASA has thoroughly debunked this theory in an article they wrote[1], explaining that in the last pole shift “no drastic changes in plant life or animal life” occurred. So, if we trust NASA with this (which I do), we shouldn’t worry about global chaos caused by the shifting poles. But what about the lights in the sky? And I’m not talking about aliens…

What are those strange lights?... The aurora borealis makes its grand appearance in Sandpoint, Idaho several times these past few years. This is a photo of Priest Lake and the northern lights. Photo By Craig Goodwin

The aurora borealis, or the northern lights, is caused by space weather (solar radiation) and our magnetic field colliding. This is actually indirectly associated with the polar shift, as the gradual moving of these poles makes the magnetic fields vary in strength. These beautiful sights can actually be seen by us here in Sandpoint. Amelia Goldworm describes these lights as “whiteish with a tint of brown” and “cloud like.”

Though it is rare, it does happen, so if you don’t want to miss out on the next one throw Soft Serve News (http://www.softservenews.com/gps-aurora-borealis-forecast.html) onto your bookmarks bar and check it out, it predicts where the northern lights will be seen and when.

Marijuana Legalization…Story by Patrick Feyen

Now that Marijuana is legal, adults can use it recreationally, but only in Washington and Colorado.  Last year it was voted in each state that marijuana would be allowed recreationally and purchasable in sanctioned “pot shops.” Only customers over the age of 21 can legally walk in and purchase up to an ounce of different strains and food based items infused with Marijuana.  Although it  is legal in Washington to use marijuana recreationally, however, it may only be used in private and never in public places. Legalized marijuana won’t mean much in terms of Idaho, at least not for the foreseeable future, but it may lead to more drug related arrests coming from Washington into any state that is still criminalized. It is definitely legal to use marijuana in Washington and Colorado, but they will both have very different laws regarding the manufacture, selling, storage, and possession of their product.

In Washington, you can buy marijuana, but only about a quarter of an ounce at a time. In Colorado, anyone who goes to the dispensary can leave the premises with up to an entire ounce of the product although it must be kept in a child safe container.  Washington has set in place a similar way of tracking the marijuana through the processes it goes through before being sold, which includes growing, clipping, packaging, distribution, and finally selling to the customer. A computer chip travels with each specific plant, and the chip can be used to track the plants so nothing can go missing.

The state of Washington has openly accepted that the general population of its citizens wants marijuana to be legal, whereas Colorado towns have taken opposition to the new law even though its citizens want it. Most Colorado towns will only let already active marijuana dispensaries to remain in business, and will not allow even those shops to apply

for a recreational business license until well into 2016 when other new to the scene stores may apply for those licenses as well.

Colorado is being called the “New Amsterdam” of the US, but the governor of the state, John

Hickenlooper, has made it clear to the state and all cities within that marijuana stores are not allowed within the main streets of any city.  Also, advertisements are not allowed anywhere that it may be seen by minors.  Commercials may be aired, but only if there is without a doubt that less than 25% of the viewers will be under the age of 21. It may be strange to think about having a marijuana store close to you, especially if you live close to a big city.  Spokane, Washington will have marijuana dispensaries by the end of next year.  Five stores will be in the city limits of Spokane, while another 15-20 will be opening around Spokane County within the next 3 years and 334 state wide.

If you are in the mindset that you want nothing to do with marijuana and are staunchly opposed to the subject and the plant, Idaho should be fine for you for now.  Every time the state tries to pass a bill bringing medicinal marijuana to the state; it has been shot down time and time again.

If you are of the pot smoking variety, don’t expect to be lighting up at cheap prices either, the states will be putting a heavy tax on the substance in question and will be implementing them for each step.  Washington ha

Whether you like it or not, marijuana is legally making its way to cities and states near you, and is believed that it will continue forward to the rest now that it has been decriminalized in these two prominent states.s imposed a high 25% tax on each step, bringing the price to an easy $12 a gram which is designed to be competitive to illicit street prices. Washington has put a cap on how much product can be grown each year, which equals to about 80 tons, 40 for marketable smoking substance and the other for other substances (I.e. food or baked goods). The cap is placed to stop diversion and illegal smuggling of the substance to other states, which is a major concern to the Washington State Liquor Control Board.  Colorado has yet to impose a cap, but state officials have said they will if it becomes necessary.  Washington is not stricter on all fronts, unlike Colorado who says they will not allow out of state investing.  Washington has said that you must live in state for at least 2 years minimum to be able to invest in growth or manufacturing of marijuana.

Deaths on Black Friday?…..Story by Jack Meier

Yes, it’s official.  People care so much about their new Xbox or PlayStation that they will kill to get it.  What have we come to as a nation?

Black Friday does get heated; sure, that one guy who took the last copy of the new movie or game got you pretty ticked, but bringing pepper spray and spraying them in the face and then taking their items is crossing the line.

One of our own students witnessed someone get mugged over a Wii a few years back.  Mario Bushell watched a fellow shopper hit a person over the head with a frying pan.  This incident was the result of the past Black Friday, all over a simple Wii system.

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, and it is the largest retail shopping day in the world.  It has historically been the day when large companies have certain items largely discounted. It has a history of violence and even death.  It is the start of the official Christmas shopping season.

It was up until a few years ago an American holiday, but many countries around the world have recently taken up the trend too.

Many people use Black Friday for their Christmas shopping, and it gets very, very crowded.  People often begin to line up hours before the shopping equivalent of Shanghai rush hour.

Why is this day so violent?  What drives people over the edge?  After all, if people are shooting each other over toys, imagine what we’ll do to the guy that bumps into us!

Many people are struggling in the present-day economy.  Black Friday offers great deals on things that their kids want.  Parents want to give their kids the best they can for a cheaper price.

Many parents resort to violence to get their kids the things they want.  One woman cut in front of 300+ people in a Black Friday line.  Her items were taken, and later she said that she just wanted to get her son the newest toy, and that it probably wouldn’t be there anymore.  “Everyone was doing it” she said.

“I was trying to get a videogame, and some dude picked me up, and threw me across the aisle, and threw a bunch of clothes at me.” Mario Bushell, FBCS student.

5208885920_30849f0df2

Black Friday is getting more and more violent as the years pass by.

Wal-Mart has announced that it will be moving the start of Black Friday up two hours from last year.  This will start the rush earlier, essentially turning it into Black Thursday Night.

Many people think that Black Friday is a great day to get good deals on items you like.  Others think that it should be removed from the calendar.

Some people who have never been to Black Friday don’t understand the hype.  I mean $150 off a flat screen television is pretty sweet, but would you really risk your life for it?

Black Friday, (or Black Thursday Night now), is a shopping event that offers big savings on popular items.  Whether or not you want to risk your life for a new TV is your choice.  But if you’re going to go to Black Thursday Night this year, you might want to come prepared.
